How to Change a VPS Root Password

Set a new root password from More actions → Reset password on the VPS details page. You must confirm the action with your current account login password. The server powers off, applies the password, and starts again, so schedule the change during a quiet period.

How to Change a VPS Root Password

Steps

  • Sign in to the console and open the VPS details page from My Servers.
  • Select More actions ▾ → Reset password.
  • The dialog contains a randomly generated password that already meets the requirements. Use it, enter another password, or select the dice button 🎲 to generate a new one.
  • The password must be 8–30 characters and include uppercase letters, lowercase letters, and numbers.
  • Under Current account password, enter the password you use to sign in to this website. This secondary identity check protects a high-risk action.
  • Select Confirm. When the task finishes, the new password is active and appears in the connection information on the details page.

Important

  • Due to provider restrictions, the task powers the server off, changes the password, and powers it on again, which is equivalent to a restart. The workload is briefly interrupted, so perform it during a quiet period.
  • Enter your account login password, not the old root password. The old root password is already displayed on the page and would not provide a meaningful identity check.
  • If the issue is that you cannot connect, review Troubleshooting a VPS Connection Failure first. Changing the password may not be necessary.
