Start, Shut Down, Restart, or Force Power Off a VPS

Steps

• Sign in to the console and open the VPS details page from My Servers.
• Select More actions ▾ in the upper-right corner of the title row and choose an action under Power:
• Start is available when the instance is powered off.
• Shut down is available while the instance is running and performs a normal graceful shutdown.
• Restart is available while the instance is running.
• Force power off is available while the instance is running. It is a high-risk action and requires a second confirmation.
• After the command is submitted, the instance enters a transitional state. The page refreshes the status automatically; wait for the final result.

When to force power off

A forced power-off is equivalent to unplugging a physical machine. Data that has not been written to disk can be lost. Use it only when the operating system is frozen and a normal shutdown or restart does not respond. For routine operations, use the regular Shut down or Restart action.

Notes

• Do not submit duplicate actions while the instance is in a transitional state. Wait for the status to stabilize before continuing.
• A disabled action usually means the current state does not allow it; for example, Start is unavailable while the instance is already running.
