How to Reinstall a VPS Operating System

Reinstall a VPS from the More menu on its details page. Choose an operating-system image and a new root password, then confirm. Reinstallation erases the system disk; afterward, the new password appears on the details page and is sent by email.

Steps

  • Sign in to the console and open the VPS details page.
  • In the upper-right corner of the title row, select More ▾ → Reinstall OS.
  • Choose an operating-system image. Images are grouped by family, such as Ubuntu, CentOS, and Debian. Choose Keep current system if you do not want to change the operating system.
  • Set a new root password. A randomly generated strong password is prefilled; you can enter one manually or use the dice button to generate another. Do not leave it blank.
  • Optionally set the SSH port. Leave it blank to keep the current port.
  • Select Confirm reinstall (erase system disk) and complete the confirmation.

After reinstallation

  • The instance status changes to Reinstalling, and no other operations are available until the task finishes.
  • When it completes, the new root password appears on the Root password row of the details page, where it can be copied. The system also emails you a notification.

Restrictions

Only a normally active instance can be reinstalled. An instance whose provisioning failed or that is already in a transitional state cannot be reinstalled.
