What Are BGP, CN2, GIA, and GT? A Plain-English Guide to China Mainland Routing
A one-read primer on BGP multi-homing and China Telecom's CN2 GT/GIA tiers—and why the route, not just the server, decides your latency and stability into mainland China.
Why the "route" makes or breaks the experience
Data doesn't travel in a straight line from a server to your device—it hops across several carrier networks along the way. The same server, reached over a different route, can show wildly different latency (ping), packet loss, and peak-hour stability for users in mainland China. The gap widens for overseas data centers serving mainland users, where traffic has to cross an international gateway and the three big carriers (China Telecom, Unicom, and Mobile).
What "BGP multi-homing" means
BGP (Border Gateway Protocol) is the routing protocol that decides how traffic moves between autonomous systems (AS). When a data center advertises "BGP multi-line," it usually means it connects to several carriers at once and lets BGP pick the best entry point for each visitor.
- Upside: routes are chosen dynamically, so a Telecom user isn't forced to detour through a Unicom-only link.
- Caveat: BGP only governs the entry path. It's a capability, not a quality guarantee—it says nothing about how good the international bandwidth on each line actually is.
Outbound vs. return path, and "all-three-carrier direct"
Two terms come up constantly:
- Three-network direct: a direct, low-detour path to all three carriers (Telecom, Unicom, Mobile).
- Outbound vs. return: outbound is "you → server"; the return path is "server → you." Your download and streaming experience is driven mostly by the return path, since that's where the heavy traffic flows. Labels like "CN2 GIA" often refer specifically to the return path.
China Telecom's CN2: GT vs. GIA
CN2 is China Telecom's next-generation backbone. Compared with the ordinary 163 backbone, it's less congested and takes shorter paths. Two tiers show up most often:

A rough ladder: ordinary line < CN2 GT < CN2 GIA—higher up usually means steadier and more expensive. One nuance: GIA can be outbound-only or bidirectional; only a two-way premium path delivers the full GIA experience.
Reading a provider's line labels
- Check whether the premium quality is on the outbound or return path—return matters more for downloads and video.
- "CN2" is not automatically "GIA." Some listings optimize only Unicom/Mobile while Telecom still rides an ordinary line.
- Treat the labels as hints. What counts is a real test from your own region and carrier: a ping, a traceroute, and peak-hour packet loss.
- Unicom has premium lines such as AS9929/CUII, and Mobile has CMIN2—the same logic applies well beyond Telecom.
